Method

Federal tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction published by the IRS. Social Security is 6.2% up to $184,500 and Medicare 1.45%. State income tax is an estimated effective rate for a middle-income single filer; flat-tax states use their statutory rate. Local income taxes, such as those in New York City, Philadelphia, Ohio cities and Maryland counties, would lower take-home further and are not included. Full details on the methodology page.
